WALLTOPIA COLLIDER ACTIVITY CENTRE / Sofia / 2013

International, open and anonymous one-stage competition for preliminary architectural design of the Walltopia Collider Activity Centre in Sofia

Architects: Miloš Jovović & Nikola Topalov
Gross area: cca. 8,000 sqm
Role: Co-author
The Activity Centre called for an architecture which invites to be explored, played with, which is unpredictable, unbalanced, and never producing itself completely.
The mass of the building is a result of a delicate interplay between large open spaces, and small closed ones, tall and short, hidden and displayed. By its volume, the building does not stand still and monumental, but wants to be active, pushing and pulling the space in and out, making the visitors a part of the game.
Various interconnected segments of the building provide continuous development of spatial and functional wholes which one has to gradually discover.
The building revolves around its greenhouse where most of the functions diverge. It serves as a public living room, inviting passers-by with its transparency and playfulness, both inside and outside.
